Stay at home pets

Some people want a minecraft dog cat or parrot to stay at home but making it sit down restricts freedom. Why not make it possible for it to sit, follow, or free roam. With the free roam option it can’t open doors and you could keep it in the house without it following you. Worried it might get lost well why not make it if they’re on free roam the have a max block radius they can travel from initial free roam point. Just a way to make pets feel more alive without taking the risk of them falling off a cliff, or getting hurt. I don’t see any drawbacks to it and similar to villager mechanics where they don’t leave the villages because of beds maybe an item could decide where their home is instead of the max roam distance? I always like having pets in minecraft but it scares me to lose them in any instance so an option to keep our pets home would be appreciated!
