Being punished for repairing tools, combining books, & going for stronger / maxed gear is very rough
Already there is a lot of some effort usually to get the materials to do these actions.
The requirement of order & inability to go for repairing is growing rough for the design for the game. Especially with 24w31a adding special books that aren't max enchantment level.
Either removing anvil use count for books, repairing, or all events would be nice (maybe a more set prices for these actions?)
Enchantment tables are not a robust enough system to go for those max enchantments in items with cleanly reflecting the effort the change to villagers is trying to encourage.
Aka less slot machine / roll dice grinding gameplay.
Mending put a band aid in the issue allowing delaying repairs till they alwere unneeded but with the villager change mending is even later in gameplay most often then not.
