Using a lightning rod and placing a new block that stores the lightning under the rod. You could then use that block as a block of redstone but instead it only powers or “electrifies” Blocks of Copper next to it. Which could then be used to power existing redstone components like pistons (of course though these components would have to be “modified” slightly by… for example placing a copper ingot underneath a piston in a crafting table to make a “Conductive Piston” or “Conductive Sticky Piston” and such. As for the signal strength of the Lightning storage block (idk what to call it) it would be similar to redstone initially but it would increase the more it is struck by lightning idk what the max “lightning charge” would be though. Overall this redstone-esque system would offer more flexibility and simplicity than redstone (at the cost of not having the depth that redstone has I.e comparators) allowing you to twist and turn the signal in which ever way you want, say you want to send an electric charge vertically well just make a pillar of copper blocks! One last idea maybe the comparator could be used to transfer an electric charge into a redstone signal giving comparators more functionality!
