Mojang is close to making something that works, the Tuff and Copper golems both had mechanics that caused either a "cool down" or "maintenance" effect which is the right track for useful golems. The problem was the Tuff and Copper weren't that useful for most players.

Golems need functionality that helps the players, Iron is melee defense, and the Snow golem a fun range mob to lure in hostiles. what is missing is some ranged attacker, and automation uses for players.

A ranged golem could have a limited inventory for arrows, potions, etc. 3 slots but basically gives an automated dispenser towards hostiles.

Automations are really there to reduce grind, Farming (for those who don't want to use villagers), Lumber harvesting (could be a simple block breaker golem and then redstone automation to place the wood in front of it), Fishing, animal breeding, crafting (really doubt they allow that). there's a variety of tasks that could be done by golems to ease up the grind for players balanced by either the speed being slower than a player and/or the player has to maintain the golem periodically. Let alone the cost of making these golems could be more than an Iron or Snow rationally.

Or even a guard (modified Glare) that patrols along edges of lighted areas and "alarms" at nearby hostiles, can even be led by the player via lesh or following light.

If Mojang puts forth a golem with real functionality to players it will win a mob vote.
