Maybe it could have higher base damage while being unable to do critical hits or sweep attacks? This could pose a problem when it comes to engaging gameplay. However similar to a real life spear all attacks to a target 1-2 blocks from the player could do dramatically less damage. Or even none! To remedy this a spear could have a extra block or so of reach that (if you really want something like a crit) could deal extra damage if a target is within that range.

Your idea is great, I just want to distinguish it further (and sorry for makeing my comment longer than your post).

I think this idea truly shines  if you want a new play style based on movement, agility and distance. It must be said that if you make a new post or edit this one with these ideas in mind that it might be a better fit in the experimental combat update. As a side note the bamboo spear (could) have entirely unique enchantments too like; an increase in range on the aforementioned "sweet spot" (that i never called a sweet spot) or a deflect enchantment (in that 1-2 block range there would be a % chance that you could block a % of damage based off of the strength of the enchantment).

amount defended could be 100% or scale 15-75% through levels 1-5 for example.

while block chance I think would fit best on a 1-3 scale (e.g. 20-60%) so you can feel the difference. However anything works, even just a fixed 30% once you get the other enchantment.

either way you earned my vote and I'm not even a spear guy!

From any material. A sword and two sticks (with the addition of new bamboo crafts, only bamboo can now be used).
The spear should take a penalty to attack speed and damage if the second hand has a shield or something. So in a duel with shields, the spear will lose to the sword, and in a duel without shields, it will win.

Yes! Minecraft desperately needs more weapon variety. I was thinking about a spear idea on my own. One of my ideas was like a riptide enchantment for the spear but different. When you charge the spear with right click, it sends you running forward dealing high damage and knockback to anything you hit.

also make it have different enchantments. For example, make it have sharpness, but not loyalty. Perhaps channeling but it either causes significant damage to or burns the spear. Also, it sticks to mobs.

Adding a new weapon? SOMETHING THAT GOES INTO AN UNDERUSED WEAPON CLASS?! THIS IS REVOLUTONARY!!! (now all we need are different types of bows and crossbows like in dungeons)

    How about this:

    Bamboo Stave

[_] [X] [_] – Iron / Stone / Gold / etc., including coal* and a wood or third bamboo block**
    [_] [B] [_] – Bamboo
    [_] [B] [_] – Bamboo

    * – a coal bamboo spear gives you a tiki torch which is a place-able light source as well as a weapon that deals flame damage. Perhaps simple flame damage, perhaps magic staff mechanics

** – giving you a bō staff; the different wood types give different colours. To get the different wood colours for, let's say, a diamond spear you can do this:

    [_] [D] [_] – Diamond
    [_] [S] [_] – Bō staff
    [_] [_] [_]

Consider the potential for this being a mechanic used in conjunction with potions

2 bamboo sticks and a flint would be a good recipe
