Now that Armor Trimming is being added to Minecraft, it would be great to have the ability to overwrite the armor that is being displayed on your character (and have it just be a visual effect).
This is by no means a revolutionary system. There are a multitude of implementations in a variety of games and even some mods. However, now that the Mojang team is focusing on player expression and storytelling for this next update, I think this feature would certainly do wonders.
Why? It allows for more customization! For example, this way you could decide to trim your leather armor however you prefer, and you wouldn't have to fear having lost hours or materials in the future if it ever gets destroyed. This would even allow (in a multiplayer scene) to have plenty of people team-up with vibrant coloured leather amours, with the coolest trim patterns, and have them still be protected by the iron, diamond or netherite armour that they actually wear.
How? I guess one way of approaching this is to add additional armor slots in the inventory UI for the armor pieces you decide to use with a cosmetic-only function. And if PVP is a concern, maybe implementing a command to enable/disable this feature could work.
