Archaeology can be enhanced with one more fun feature in the 1.20 update, that being dig sites which were previously briefly mentioned when archaeology was first introduced as an upcoming Minecraft feature.
Dig sites could contain some sort of buried treasure map perhaps or something similar, or be related to mineshafts in a way, for example being connected to mineshafts or have the potential of leading players towards mineshafts. Entering a mineshaft through a dig site would definitely (occasionally) be more interesting and more "storytelling" and "adventurous" than spotting "a little mineshaft post or fence thingy".
At the very least, if those two ideas seem like too much, I suggest something small, equivalent to the desert well that has a couple pieces of the new suspicious sand, slightly increasing how commonly archaeology can be practiced.
Archaeology feels like the type of feature that can be considered as a form of Minecraft "class"/"hobby", where you can dedicate time to getting deep into its ins and outs, I believe that dig sites (along with other potential features that might get suggested before the release of this update) can definitely add on to that.
