My children started playing Minecraft around 5 years old, and the first thing they did was to start hitting animals and pushing villagers into lava. I had used peaceful mode to protect them from hostile mobs, but had no way to keep them from harming the non-hostile mobs that spawned, other than to turn off all spawns and turn off creative mode to remove access to spawn eggs.
I am not concerned about the welfare of mobs, but don't like the idea of my small children harming mobs in the game just for the fun of it.
I considered significantly buffing health for all non-hostile mobs and making them team up and respond with force in response to force (like wolves). This still seems like a good alternative approach to me for some mobs (like villagers) but makes less sense for others (like glow squids).
