I'd rather have 1-3 armor trims whenever they occur in chest loot.

I've thought if they could be 1 diamond + 7 of the appropriate material to the trim (or 1 slab version of the material, since the trims seem like slabs rather than full block sized).

clay that then needs to be baked. It would change the "saving diamonds" to "saving time..."

Agreed. I'd have already ventured across my world and fought to find a template that is only cosmetic and 7 diamonds more for adding color is a bit much. 7 diamonds to apply netherite to diamond equipment is acceptable though.
Cheaper trims would also make it more practical to apply them to lower tier armor, as you wouldn't have to spend the equivalent of Diamond Leggings for each piece you want to decorate.

yesss!! so glad someone posted this!

and it makes sense, trimming armor shouldn't be so much of a hassle - i havent even found one in my world, and it'll cost a ton of diamonds to make a copy of it :(

Armor trims are a purely cosmetic item. It feels like a huge waste to use diamonds (an item that can be very useful when used for something else) on something that is essentially “useless” and is only there for the fun of having it. Also, I think that the audience who wants armor trims, does not overlap very much with the audience that has a lot of expensive items like diamonds, as those players would probably use them on something more useful.
