Butterflies have been asked for before, but I think just having 16 variants wouldn't do much for a creature that is known for being colorful, so picture this:
Butterflies come in different wing patterns, these patterns, much like currently existing fish, have two (maybe three?) colors, which are generated at random on spawn. However, unlike tropical fish, butterflies can be bred with flowers, and this is where the interesting part begins.
Butterfly breeding works like horse breeding. The offspring will have one of the parent's pattern (at random) and the primary and secondary (and terciary) colors will, also, be chosen at random from the parents, with a small chance of a random color (or pattern), just like horses, making every pattern and color obtainable from just 2 butterflies.
Thanks to this, players can smartly breed butterflies into specific colors, allowing them to make butterflies with the colors of pride flags, country flags, sports teams... This would give players an opportunity to express themselves and decorate their world in new ways.
Behaviourally, the butterfly would just fly around stopping at flowers, much like a bat. Its purpose would be enviroment, decoration, and of course, self expression.
