It is better to carve such a chest (or rather a coffin) from a solid non-fragile igneous rock, like granite.
A characteristic feature of any slate is its layers into which it breaks up, something solid cannot be hollowed out of it. These layers can be used as joining plates, but how do you hold them together? Joiner's connections?
