Features to make rafts more tuned for navigation in small bodies of water:
- Sea grass could slow down boats but have a lesser effect on rafts as a raft would sit more on top of the water.
- Leads could connect rafts to each other by using lead on either of the two seats/halves (this would limit the number of leads on a boat to 2 to form keep it balanced)
- The raft could be more nimble by turning and accelerating faster, but reaching a lower max speed than boats (this could be done by decreasing the acceleration of boats but increasing their max speed and keeping rafts the same possibly only slowing them down a little)
- Rafts could be "lighter" and float up in water quicker when submerged to help navigate water ways such as shallow waterfalls that change elevation.
- Rafts could go fast on ice while regular boats could go a more manageable speed as a hull would slow down movement on a flat surface
Currently, bamboo rafts are a nice variation of the boat that keeps the new wood type less repetitive, but the visual difference could go along with a functional difference to make bamboo less of a retextured wood and more of a unique block. As said during the Minecraft Live reveal, the boat is intended to look more adventurous, but they lack a new functional use for exploration. Sea grass could affect the speed in a stepped manner as described in one of my other suggestions. In future updates river generation could make navigation more difficult in biomes such as the jungle if not using a raft.
