Chat Reporting would do more harm than good. If you do not remove this feature entirely, we as a community will make sure that you start losing profits. We have a couple of tricks up our sleeves to do just that. Think independence from all your services.

I appreciate the newly created help article, but the details provided in that article are still insufficient. Please update the help article (or create an FAQ) to answer the following questions.

    1. Is suspension from online play the only action a moderator may take, or are there other actions that may happen as well? For example, are reports about imminent illegal actions sent to the police?
    2. What is the purpose of the "self-harm" category? Will moderators ban people from online play for suffering from mental illness? If so, that seems extremely counter-productive. A better response would be to provide the player with the phone number of a suicide prevention hotline.
    3. How are your moderators trained? Are they employees of Mojang Studios or of Microsoft? Will you have enough moderators to handle all of the reports from such a large playerbase, while still giving the due attention that each report requires?
    4. Will your moderators be able to handle reports submitted in languages other than English?
    5. Does a ban from online play prevent playing with other players via the "Open to LAN" feature of singleplayer worlds?
    6. Does a ban from online play prevent playing on a server that has a whitelist? If so, it feels like an encroachment to tell a server owner that they are not allowed to play with someone who they explicitly listed on the whitelist.

Third party servers are the responsibility of that owner, and the owner alone.

Forcing an unknown, blackboxed, abusable report system that bans a player from ALL servers, be they public/whitelisted/local LAN is a gross misstep, especially with how poorly you handled account migration issues.

So here's a better option for you:

    A permanent record system.

Got banned on a server? Get's recorded next to your account, and other server owners can see this and act on it, or automatically block a user reported too many times, with the option to forgive/whitelist them past such automation on a case by case basis.

Abusable? Probably with spinning up multiple servers. Might have to tie a server to a player account for accountability of reports.

You could even keep your "signed chat context" system with this, to attach "evidence".

How about letting us tag our servers if you're so concerned Lil' Timmy might see the word "butts", and bind that to your parental control scheme.

RECONSIDER the chat reporting feature. Either make it only on realms, make it so that you can turn it off in your server if you want or the best option: DON'T ADD IT AT ALL. Being a good person won't do anything because systems like this ALWAYS get abused. Please reconsider the chat reporting.

Most if not all public Minecraft servers have moderation, that has worked fine over the last 10+ years I'd suggest adding an option in game to disable Multiplayer for parents if you REALLY want to would work far better and not intrude on people's server's they pay for and host themselves.

Edit: Forgot to mention with the current system your locked out of LAN aswell if your banned from MP which is just bonkers.

This is a genuinely TERRIBLE idea. There are already hacked clients in the works which spam report people to the moderation team, This will be abused way more than used normally. PLEASE, PLEASE RECONSIDER THIS. I'm begging you. This is my favorite game, and I hate to see it going downhill like this.

Please reconsider this chat report feature. Java is NOT bedrock and the player base is far more mature on Java. It is one thing to enforce these rules on realms since that is run by Mojang. Killing your massive and very vibrant community server population is not what we want.

I do not understand why you would add this chat report feature. WE pay for our servers NOT you. Minecraft is about freedom. If WE set Rules on OUR Server that WE pay for then these rules go. If we want an anachry server like 2b2t then let it be, WE pay for the server. As well as that there will be hacks, mods, clients that just absolutly spam you with ban reports. The banning spree will be like a tsunami wave. Also idk understand why you would sacrafice time, money and employes just for this feature that no one askes for. You saw what happened in bedrock, you knew there was already backlash but did you think on java there wouldnt be any?? Dont expect this feature to just be accepted. As well is that i wish i never did the microsoft Migration, sacrificing my free space where i joke with my friends just for a cape was a bad deal. PLS mojang and microsoft DONT DO THIS

I think chat reporting is a good thing! As a BIPOC and also LGBT person, I often get harassed because of my skin or the beliefs I express. A lot of servers often ignore my reports, including some very large ones I wont mention specifically. My option has always been to simply attempt an in-server report and disable chat. I shouldnt have to do this. Systematic abuse is a terrible thing and while Im capable of handling it like an adult many probably cant. I am speaking up in the name of many other LGBTQA2+ and BIPOC people I know and possibly dont know who are too scared to say things on this important matter themselves. We need to take a stand against online harassment and this is a fantastic way against this. If you arent being actively offensive you shouldnt have to worry about being banned. As usual the toxic gaming community is speaking up against safety features for us all....

Anything that has to do with Mojang snooping in servers and banning people instead of letting server admins decide what happens, JUST DON'T! Everything is fine the way it is. Oh and...Player reporting? You serious?

Normally, my self-esteem is pretty low, and as such I don't usually have much confidence.

However, I can say with complete and utter confidence - and with my ten years playing this game, that this new chat system is an absolutely disgusting, repulsive, and distasteful feature.

Just throwing one more comment into the pile re:reporting and bans. This doesn't help anyone, it takes autonomy away from server communities who were doing fine before this and who operate on rules of their community. It doesn't help players, who've always been able to operate on the rule of "find another server" when they come into issues. And it doesn't help you or Microsoft, who need to put resources into reports, even after they are automated, which they will be let's be real here, and who are seriously tarnishing your rep by steamrolling ahead despite outcry. Things were fine already, we didn't need this, we don't want this. Come on Microsoft, as reviled a company as you are, Minecraft was one of the few things we liked about you, since after buying it Notch kinda went off the deep-end into the far-right. Don't throw that away.

While this comments section is as of this comment not too cluttered at only 28 comments, I'd invite you to take a look at reddit, PlanetMinecraft or the Minecraft forums to see the general consensus, we don't want this, we don't need this.

How it should be (a modest proposal):
    - The banlist should be opt out in server.properties (example: allowRestrictedAccouts=false)
    - Message signing should also be optional in server.properties (allowInsecureChat=false)
    - If you have to, add an explanation of what the ramification of allowing these suggested settings are in the EULA which we have to accept as "server owners".
    - With signing being optional now (hypothetically), it should be a parental setting (enabled by default) to only allow to join signed servers. Adults can still join all server.
    - They can even name it "allow connecting to unmoderated/insecure servers". Make it sound as bad as you want.Or have it only be available for 16 (example age) and older and give a flavor text explaining what this entails.
    - Lastly they can add warning popup before connecting to an """insecure""" server (similar to the 3rd party multiplayer acknowledgement). In which Mojang covers their butt (don't wanna say the a-word or I might get banned) and gives a disclaimer.

Should go without saying that this of course only concerns 3rd party community servers (for which you already added a disclaimer ingame!).

We already have good examples of similar implementations of features like this in the game (EULA, parental settings, popups, config settings, and so on). There is nothing about what I listed that could not be technically done. I would like to hear Microsoft/Mojang to explain themself why the  feature is not implemented this way.

The chat reporting feature is an unfortunate step away from the freedom Minecraft offers to server owners. It is rather invasive, takes things out of context,  and can get innocent people banned. My friends and I are alright using profanity in the server we maintain and moderate. We are comfortable with it, and we don't want a random player abusing the report feature.

Minecraft is a game for everyone.

The problem here is that Microsoft is trying to make Minecraft a safe place for kids, instead of making a safe place for kids within Minecraft.

I truely do hope that you fine people over at Microsoft/Mojang do something about this change. Even just making it an "Opt-in" feature for server owners would smooth things over with the community massively. The push against this change is overwhelming.

Thank you if you read this, and have a nice day.

In addition to what everyone already mentioned, not everyone follows up on updates. I can already see people getting permanently banned from multiplayer because players who haven't looked up the update will think the report option is just a little message to a friend who runs the server. If you make this a feature a slide that explains it has to show up on the multiplayer screen for months after the release. Not doing so will be extremely irresponsible.

    Hello Mojang

In my opinion the new chat filter is unnecessary beacuse of the fact that Minecraft Java Edition's avarage age is 24 so i do not see any problem with grown up mans talking a bit bad with each other and talking bad with each other has never been a big problem in Minecraft from the start so i do not really understand why do we need it now.

    Thank You.

Chat reporting in Java edition ist a very bad idea in my opinion. We already have server admins that do amazing jobs at keeping their own servers safe. We do not need a global and exploitable (I am sure this will happen) system for banning players accounts permanently.

If necessary allow for parental controls to approve servers, disable chat, filter words or list servers as 18+ so that kids can't join them. No need to change and police a system that has been running smoothly for over a decade.

If this system makes it to full release we could very well observe the downfall of Minecraft Java edition and the whole server culture behind it.

Please reconsider. Limiting all multiplayer for a player who has broken the rules, which, truth be told, are fairly arbitrary and nebulous, is insane. Please do not implement the system of chat reporting and server bans. A public database of reported players with the reasons as to why they were reported, with which individual servers can do as they wish, would be an infinitely better compromise. I still believe this would be an overreach on behalf of Mojang/Microsoft, but in my opinion is a far more reasonable solution towards online harassment than what has been proposed in this article.

Mojang, The reporting/ban system is a HORRIBLE idea, and it will completely ruin Minecraft unless it can be disabled for third-party servers/realms. I own a realm and its complete stupidity that me and my friends having fun could result in us losing privilege to one of our favorite pastimes. Why let public admins control a private server? Its ridiculous.

The whole community has made it clear that we do not want this change (in the way it is currently).

Plus, many servers already have their own moderation teams that already do the job of protecting our communities. In short, don't fix it if it isn't broken.

However, I do think we should keep the Realm Profanity Filter and Social Interactions Menu for those who still need to ignore other players.

Chat reporting on Minecraft Realms run by Microsoft, on Microsoft hardware is fine. I have no issue with Microsoft having any say over what players do on Microsoft owned servers.

DO NOT extend this functionality to private servers. it is not wanted or needed, and is begging for abuse. I've been a server moderator for many years, and I'm sure the various cheaters, griefers, bigots, and Neo-Nazis I've banned over the years would LOVE to mass report my account and get me banned from my own server.

Given the player base of Minecraft, there is no way that humans are going to be behind every decision, and no AI yet made is going to be able to correctly judge situations, leading to false bans, and exploitation of the algorithm. Leave private servers, to the server owners. A player banned from Realms should still be able to get on private servers that will have them.

Putting aside the moral concerns about strictly moderating all speech on a platform, this system is ripe for abuse. Giving any player the ability to report any other would permit anyone with a burner account to get any player banned for statements out of context. This could actually prevent server hosts from properly moderating their own servers because they might be afraid of getting banned from the platform themselves. I agree with the goal of removing hate speech but these powers should be in the hands of people who are actually on the server and know whats going on.

Microsoft I really hope you reconsider this and decide not to add it. Just go and look at the feedback. Look at Youtube, Twitter, Reddit, THE COMMUNITY DOES NOT WANT THIS. REMOVE IT. TAKE IT AWAY. PLEASE. At the start, Anarchy Servers such as 2b2t are gonna be completely destroyed. Then it will effect other servers such as Hypixel and Hive. This is going to destroy multiplayer and I wouldn't be surprised if the fanbase falls apart.

    RECONSIDER
CONSIDER NOT ADDING IT AT ALL
