Deserts are not just all sand; Why not add some more interesting terrain to deserts, such as plateaus. (The badlands already has plateau-like structures, and the Savannah has its variant.) I also think plateaus in the desert might help make desert terrain have more varying heights, making it more challenging to traverse. Regarding how these would generate it would make sense that the desert plateau would generate in low erosion areas. I also think this might help better transition with other dry biomes with plateau-like structures. i.e. (A savannah plateau or an elevated mesa in a badlands bordering a desert should continue as a plateau when erosion levels in that area are low; it should not cut off and turn into sand or a river).
Additionally, the tops (3 blocks) of the desert plateaus should consist of exposed sandstone with small patches of sand for cacti and dead bushes to grow. The exposed sandstone allows the quarrying of large amounts of sandstone in a relatively contained area compared to sand mining. Lapis ore blobs here should be a bit larger ( 2 to 5 more ore generating at max) and close to the surface in the underground sections of this sub biome but would be as common as anywhere else.
