I think both the potential changes to the attack cooldown, as well as your suggested improvement to it, are both unnecessary, complicated and unintuitive. How is a new player meant to know how all this works? And making reach variable would likely make new players to PVP frustrated and think their opponent is hacking. This is Minecraft, not an advanced fighting game. I think the current 1.9+ combat system cooldowns work well, and are intuitive, as you can clearly see that the attack indicator bar, represents percentage damage. You can also notice that clicking too fast does less knockback and less damage (since it takes longer to kill mobs and players when clicking too fast). Clicking too fast also makes a "weak" sound, as opposed to the "strong" sounding sound made by a fully charged attack.

I agree with your ideas regarding shields. instead of making shields less powerful by blocking only a set amount of damage, the current way works fine. Currently, shields can be disabled for 5 seconds with an axe, which is plenty of time to get in a nasty sword, crit chain, dealing heaps of damage in that time. But if 5 seconds is too short, make it 10 seconds. Or maybe reduce the blocking range angle from 180 degrees to 90 degrees. But I think the shield activation cooldown should be kept the same, as it is currently not too long or short. Perhaps a visual shield indicator can be added. Such as the shield taking 0.25 seconds to appear in the blocking position on the screen (in the hand).

You missed the point; first, the idea of the cooldown is good in theory, but how it is applied is not, since you can't tell how muxh damage you deal with 1.9 mechanics; second, the reach is a good idea, since it adds strategy, and it wasn't even a my idea, since mojang decided by itself this; third, you missed the shield's point, because in the combat tests, the shields blocks all explosion and projectile damage, but covers melee damage that is less than 5 (10 for shields with banners), and THIS must change; the shield disableing is conpletely fine
