I was talking to somebody on Twitter about how they weren't able to load and play the new 1.18 worlds stably on their 4 year-old phone.
I think that there should be an option to use the old surface terrain for casual players who are on weaker hardware who want to play in a 'calmer' world. The world height could stay the same and so can the cave generation. To prioritise performance maybe instead of 128 deep caves it could be changed to 96, with the rest to bedrock.
This terrain should also be supported alongside changes to the main one. An example would be adding the new Swamp and Deep Dark biomes in 1.19 for both.
Once most hardware has caught up, you might not even need it anymore. But for now it's a good balance for the people who will still want to play their Minecraft worlds without any drawbacks in the next update. And of course always give them the option to upgrade their worlds when they want to.
