In order to traverse the new mountains in the caves and cliffs update we could have an ice pick tool used to cling to the side of most normal solid blocks in order to have an advantage in climbing steep vertical mountains and walls. They would be crafted with an iron pickaxe and two iron ingots to the side and one on the bottom. Using a single ice pick would allow you to cling to a block (after sliding down a few blocks) to save yourself from falling off (a high place). Using a single ice pick in your hand slot would limit you to only clinging. Then you'd have to use your other hand to mine. Using another icepick in your offhand allows you to also freely climb up and down a wall. They'd also have the ability to quickly mine all types of ice quickly. They would have a lot of durability and would be able to mine stone types too. They'd lose durability during every cling they do. They allow you to use your inventory while clinging to the side of a wall and would need to be manually released in order to allow dexterity and freedom of movement.
