Deepslate Texture

Slate is a naturally smooth rock, breaking very cleanly and having a very fine texture. Deepslate's texture is rather like cobblestone, not only not looking so much like actual slate until it is turned into tiles or bricks, but also being very visually oppressive when in deepslate-only caves. The repeating texture makes the cave feel very cluttered.

Making a smoother texture would make the caves feel grander and more visually appealing, in addition to being more accurate to real slates.

The textures for deepslate building blocks, however, are wonderful.

    I agree, the current texture is more suitable for a cobble variant.
