It's a lot easier for the veterans and newer players to understand.
See it as everything below 0 (it's already in the name) sounds very deep.

Imagine moving the terrain up by 64 blocks. Then you'd be standing at 1 point in your old world and when you explore new chunks, the terrain is suddenly 64 blocks above you. If they make it deeper, then they could just create a bedrock wall between the new deep chuncks and the void, and it wouldn't be nearly as intimidating or ugly as having terrain 64 blocks higher than you. Also, it's a really cool effect to have negative Y coordinates. You can now identify that as you go into the negatives, you find the grim looking Deepslate.

I would prefer if Sea Level was changed to become 0, and everything gets moved to match it.

Either way, I understand the annoyance with 0 being some random layer underground, it's not very intuitive, very random.

Changing the coordinates would be a community wide nightmare since now tutorials and memorized locations will all be outdated

This would make opening old worlds in 1.17 unnecessarily complicated because you would have to move every old chunk 64 blocks up

Amaaya, have you ever read any of the changelogs? In fact, have you ever went underground? The only reason for them to make the world deeper is to create a bigger underground, and you just want them to absolutely destroy that? They lowered the depth to -64 because they wanted to increase the space of the underground from 64 blocks to 128 blocks. There is no other reason for -64 to exist as the new depth. I don't see the "annoyance" you are talking about, since below Y=0 you start seeing Deepslate, so it is very intuitive and has a very interesting effect. At the negative Y levels, the stone becomes harder, darker and has a dungeon-like feel to it, and when you go to negative Y levels you might find the Deep Dark biome.
