One thing that is really holding back Minecraft & Mojang: they're afraid of updates being "not minecrafty enough", or being afraid of being unoriginal with ideas. Of course, it's best to ask players to see if they like an idea, such as huge Twitter polls. But if Minecraft gets too stagnant, it'll lose from competition such as Terraria or Hytale. And I do want Minecraft to truly be a timeless game, still relevant for decades to come. Thankfully the recent updates, such as Aquatic, Village & Pillage, Nether, Caves & Cliffs, they're all good important updates so far, giving more to areas that are lacking like oceans and the nether.
There are many update ideas that are very popular in the community. Wolf/dog skins and armor, pet dragons, end dimension update... those are very safe update ideas that'll be well-received by the community. Looking at Hytale, it seems to be what people want minecraft to be. Incredible looking dungeons with boss-like mobs for challenge & adventure, magical attacks, pet dogs & dragons, beautiful environments with variety, and more. Terraria has many equipment variety, whereas Minecraft only has a handful of unique equipment (such as tridents or turtle helmets).
Of course, bug fixes are important too, I'd hate to see my world corrupted! But I think Minecraft can be more daring with updates, so that it'll stay as the best game of all time. Don't be afraid of using ideas from the community and mods. You can even ask them for permission if needed!
