Combat in Minecraft has been a topic for a long time now. Here is my ideas for the Combat Snapshots, with the goal of fusing the old 1.8 combat with the newer 1.9+ combat while the solving existing problems:
-
Too slow for PvP - not exciting enough
-
Damage per second is too low to beat regenerating items
-
Too hard to understand for new players.
Many games have light and heavy attacks, and using both combat mechanics, we could see this in minecraft. Light attacks deals -2 damage, but have no cooldown, just like in 1.8; Heavy attacks deal regular damage, but require the weapon to be fully charged.
Heavy attacks / full cooldown is also required to trigger extra things like sweep attacks, critical hits, shield breach etc...
This would allow (possibly new) players to land combos on their opponents, while still giving advanced players the opportunity to land more devastating attacks.
The damage of axes will also be scaled, because stone axes deal MASSIVE damage and are too easy to make. Damage scale would be the following:
-2 less damage: light sword attacks (spam clicking with diamond sword: 5 damage)
regular damage: heavy sword attack, light axe attack (diamond: 7 damage)
+2 more damage: heavy axe attack (diamond: 9 damage)
Yes, this would make axes more powerful in a 1.8 style fight, maybe they would have a higher delay or something to balance this out. Note that axes require 1 more material to craft (for ex. 3 diamonds instead of 2), so this actually makes sense.
