Controversial - I know. But I feel Minecraft has an issue of once you get deep into the late game - you're never discomforted. You never have to re-experience previous parts of the game again. I think one culprit of this is Mending. Mending ensures that as long as the player doesn't die - they don't have to focus on getting new items. They just do their thing. And this is great for some reasons but honestly it causes the game to become stale after a while. Mending also removes the point in repairing items in an Anvil.
To balance this out - I think making Netherite items have much higher durability could make tools and armour last a lot longer - albeit not forever unlike Mending. This would also warrant a way to get renewable Ancient Debris but that's an entirely different issue.
In summary - I think keeping Mending exclusive to the Elytra and Trident is in the best interest of keeping the game feeling alive. Elytra and Trident specifically because they are incredibly scarce items that require Mending to be of any use.
