New Combat Update

The big reason is that both combat systems of 1.8 and 1.9 have major flaws, with 1.8 breaking your mouse and 1.9 going overboard with cooldown time (there's more issues to both versions than just that). Minecraft is a very unique case for gaming in which what would be a "new game" in its series is implemented as an update, and an optional one at that. Take Super Smash Bros for example: there were multiple games in the series that all had the same basic concepts for combat but varied wildly. If you think as Minecraft's updates as a series of games, it makes complete sense to change how the game plays. Mojang isn't trying to divide the community, and while they undoubtedly will, it's not a problem the community can't fix.

People who don't play on servers such as Hypixel are not happy with the current PvP. The combat that both Java and Bedrock have are also very different as well and they're trying to fix that too by making them have the same combat, regardless of the platform. That's why they're changing it. And it's not like this PvP system will be worse than 1.9. The speed for weapons has greatly increased, even passing 1.8's attacking speed. Plus new features like the Cleaving enchantment for axes and food eating interruption will make PvP even more exciting. I think that this update will be great, of course with some adjustments but that's just my opinion.

At first, I liked the idea of updating combat, but I actually agree with you. 1.9 has some flaws, but completely reworking the combat system will probably make more harm than good. It can divide the community even more. Some people are really used to the 1.9 combat and learned some interesting PvP tactics. Also 1.9 made survival more challenging and more enjoyable. For the way things seem to be going, I'm concerned survival will stop being as enjoyable as it is right now.

And the sad truth is 1.8 players will keep playing in 1.8. I regularly play on 1.8 servers (I'm a 1.8 PvPer) and I can't imagine any of the players updating to this new system. It's just won't be the same PvP they're used to: knockback resistance on Netherite gear (no one will like this), end crystals, anchors for PvP, totems, shields, autoclick, reach, etc.

I'm afraid you're right. They should just focus on fixing 1.9 major flaws (like the saturation boost, bow innaccuracy, among others) on incoming updates, and then we could be talking about adding reach, stackable potions, etc. So the 1.9 community can slowly adapt to the new changes. Hopefully they will.

But no player who plays in 1.8 will stop playing in 1.8. Unless, they just make the new combat system exactly like 1.8, but that's not going to happen.

Yeah I agree with you, both 1.8 and 1.9+ combat systems aren't perfect and can never be perfect and alot of people have just been used to 1.9 combat and changing it again would just make it even worse
The community is divided rn in two parts and if there is another combat update the community would be divided into three parts and no one wants that
I hope mojang doesn't change the combat cuz of the amount of people they that have just been used to 1.9 or have started to like 1.9 will just have to get used to a newer combat system

By adding a bunch of diverse combat metas, most players, 1.8 or 1.9, will be able to find a strategy they like.

Totaly Agree, i just moved from 1.8 to 1.9 combat and i started enjoying 1.9 so much. Changing the combat would be a dumb move
