It should have a bigger resistance against close combat items but it is weak to arrows.

That's what I was thinking but then I remembered the Protection Enchantments. Maybe it's new stats will now contain Melee Weapon resistance and Projectile Weakness. However, wearing this suit and making you weaker to projectiles wouldn't make sense so instead it does 0 damage reduction to projectiles and reduces its durability more than melee weapons.

Chainmail was designed to stop arrows, so maybe it should have built-in projectile protection that stacks with regular protection.

Perhaps make it remove 75% of arrow damage?

Did some more research on this, it was said it protects the wearer fairly well against blunt weapons like maces and from slashes from edged weapons like swords. Going by this, it will have a built-in damage reduction from melee combat, and reduced critical damage from edged weapons. What do you think?

I agree that chainmail should have some good purpose that would make it, in some situations, even better than iron. However, when we look at it realistically, the main reason chainmail was used was because it was lighter and cheaper than plate armor.

In Minecraft, chainmail is (in a sense) more expensive than iron and its weight is the same. So... if we're going realistic, we don't really have any good options.

Since it suppodedly does better against blunt weapons, one use for chain mail would be for it to have an extremely high armor toughness. This means it would fair better against higher damage.
