A common problem is you have a large room, with high ceiling, you wish to light, but light does not reach the floor from the lights you put in the ceiling. With the intruduction of telescopes, with a lens appartly made from amethyst, there is lore for using this same lens to project light down from a light source. The block directly under the down lighter would be lite to the light level of the projected light. This would feel the same as when sky light goes though a hole/glass in your ceiling. (But this could work at night) No more messing about hiding lights under carpet!
Downlights are a common thing in the real world too (although usualy made of glass/plastic/metal), and would also have a vaguly educational element. (You don't need a brighter light to light something up better). Furthermore, this might be a lot easier to implement then other proposed solutions.
