The spyglass is functionally useless since it doesn't let you see farther, but instead just makes things you can already see look closer. I may be the only one to think this, but the small circle you can see through using it makes it even worse.
However, this seemingly annoying part of the feature could actually make this feature more useful. What if the spyglass stopped chunks beside you from rendering, but allowed more chunks to be rendered in front of you? That way, you could see farther by using it, minimally affecting performance. It wouldn't matter that chunks beside you are not rendering, as the black outline of the spyglass stops you from seeing them anyways.
