It would be really cool if the Glowsquid spawned near bioluminescent plankton, some sort of new entity that could exist as a conglomerate of particles, instead of a 3d model like other entities. The Glowsquid would hunt the plankton and eat it, being an educational explanation as to why those squids glow and other don't. Just like flamingos, their color could be dictated by their diet, and so, you would be able to "make" a glow squid by feeding it plankton twice or trice until the effect became permanent.
But now, if you hit plankton, i would not die, but rather just dissipate and desapear, and so, to get the plankton, you should be able to bucket it like a fish, locking its content behind the iron, so that it wouldn't be as easy as just "punching things until they work". It would be another movable source of particles (just like the new flowers) and it could be a new (and optional) challenge to the player, as to get the plankton you would need to dive deep into the sea or cavern lakes, avoiding drowning by the possible hypnotic effect of the Glowsquid itself.
By boiling the bucket of plankton in a furnace you would get a glow dye of some sort, and this can add a lot of mechanics related to leather armor, new sources of light or even changing the aesthetic effect of enchanted items. I think the plankton could be a good way to tie in the Glowsquid into it's surroundings and add new content to the game. Just imagine a underground lake full of bioluminescent plankton!
