The desert is a very iconic and integral part of the history of Minecraft. It has been there since the modern biome system was first implemented, in the Halloween update. But I feel this biome is majorly lacking in features. The already announced Meerkat, Baobab and Oasis will do a lot to fix this, however I feel like there should be a but more life there.
Introducing; the Komodo Dragon. It would be a moderately uncommon mob, with a similar spawn rate to dolphins in Oceans. The Komodo dragon would be a neutral mob, but hostile towards the undead, chickens and rabbits. It’s hard to come by food in a desert; so rabbits are the best there is. They sneak attack prey by following footsteps, and would shoot venom (unrealistic but more interesting for gameplay).
One of my ideas is that the Komodo would have a special animation after it eats some kind of meat. It could begin basking, and absorb the sun’s rays. This would let it drop scales, much like Chickens drop eggs.
A use for these scales in my mind would be for a new armour set; gilded dragon armour. It would essentially be a fusion of chain mail armour and the scales. It has less defence than iron, and would provide poison and fire resistance, to reference the hardiness of the Komodo.
I believe this would add some much needed variety and life to the deserts and Minecraft biodiversity in general. I understand it may be difficult to program, but I do not doubt the devs would be able to implement it well.
