Normally, armor nullifies a lesser portion of damage from attacks that deal greater damage. Armor toughness resists this effect, mitigating the power of strong attacks. By default, only diamond and netherite armor provide toughness, with each piece granting +2 toughness for diamond and +3 for netherite.

That's from the wiki. Trust me, I was confused on what armor toughness was too.

The current armor penetration system is very confusing. Especially when you factor in armor toughness. It's just not a very good way to do things. However, I do not think that removing it is a good idea. I really like the idea of higher damage weapons being useful against armor. I like the concept.

Remember that post I made to change the armor piercing system? Hmm, I should post that again. But, I still think that armor toughness should work like how shields do. Full diamond armor, with a toughness of 8, should block 80% of damage up to 8 damage. Anything about 8 damage should be reduced by half, 40%. So, for 10 damage, (8 - 80%) + (2 - 40%) = 1.6 + 1.2 = 2.8. I just feel like it'd be simpler.

I used to think the same, but actually armor penetration makes full enchanted diamond duels less tedious.

If you actually block 80% of every incoming damage, you're mostly invincible, specially against mobs.
