Agreed, and I think they should add a enchant called reflection, which reflects projectiles back at the attacker.

I've noticed several comments talking about how using leather as an upgrade for wooden shields is unrealistic, and I would like to disagree. Leather is a surprisingly tough material and saw widespread use in ancient times, both as an effective armor coating in medieval times (look up Shadiversity's video on Brigandine on Youtube, this explains leather armor pretty well) and as a covering for shields as well. I specifically remember hearing of wet leather being used on shields in order to put out any flaming arrows that may be shot at said shield. I think that adding some way to "wet" leather shields so that they put out flaming arrows would be nice. The way other shields would interact with flaming arrows would change as well--you could still catch on fire even if the shield totally blocks all damage.

Pretty good idea! Could be made into the game with some changes tho.

makes sense, but leather has lower durability unless if its reinforced, that idea would make people want reinforced leather armor, so good thinking, but like I said, someone probably want buffed durability on leather armor as the same idea with shields

Yes, this would be better and like how wood shields are the base and how each one looks different depending on ore like the basic one would fit with leather and you could put banners to make it not useless on bedrock, a stone would go with chain meal and it can be a bit durable than the wooden one, iron would be a good fair shield and it can be moulded like into different shapes and you can use Redstone or lapis to paint the front to put a symbol as my friends and I have wars and have are symbols. gold would look nice but weak but piglens won't mind it and its recovers quicker than others shields. diamond could be a fancy one but strong (maybe the shape of a diamond) plus it can be the same way as the way I describe iron but it's more durable. and neatherite would look badass with like a skull on it or something is it fireproof against fire aspect and flame and it won't burn in lava or from explosions. turtle can be an aqua shield like it give more protection while swimming and is on the back like a turtle shell and it gives more breathing and you cant be shot in the back.

I like the original idea and Paul Mario Ubalde's tree. Beyond that, I think a lot of these other ideas make things far too complex. I would like to this implemented with that tier tree but nothing beyond that.

I also want this... It would be cool as well that some shield could be "circular" shields (Basically squares not rectangles). But I don't entirely agree with what I believe the last paragraph is saying of adding onto the shields, with the exception of Netherite because that is a precedent already set in game.

Note to consider after further thought: I forgot you can add banners to shields so square shields would interfere. : /

Also, maybe as a PVP piece, it can be noticed that shields currently knock back the attacker, so maybe the farther you go up on tiers, the knockback the attacker receives could be higher or lower?

I think it would be pretty cool if they all had different textures too. The iron one can stay the way it is now, but I think it would be cool if they all were a little different.

I really like this idea as it would most likely cause an increase of shield use, which in my experience, is greatly lacking. Although I like this idea, I would suggest that the leather and turtle shield be removed as they are much to unrealistic.

Great idea, but Turtle Shield is probably better than Diamond (except for durability), and Leather Shield makes no sense, even for Minecraft.

Turtle Shield should only block 5 damage, and Wooden Shield should be made by using leather rather than iron in the original recipe, replacing Leather Shields entirely.

Also, the recipes seem pretty easy to make, but I'm not sure how to make them more difficult. What if smithing tables could accept more than one of a type of material (like anvils do)? It would take 5 of the respective material (excluding netherite) to upgrade.

Netherite shield could be called a Nether Shield, and you would need special Nether woods to make it.

I like this idea. I don't agree with the leather and turtle shield ideas, but wooden, iron, gold, diamond, and netherite shields would be awesome. Regular shields break so fast, even with unbreaking and mending on them. It would be so nice to have these shields.

Shield enchantments could be an alternate way to approach this. Bows utilize an enchantment system instead of tiers. We could also just do the sword thing where enchantments are a secondary way to increase damage. We could have enchantments such as:

    • Hardness: an enchantment that reduces damage from melee attacks, has multiple levels. This would be the main substitute to tiers.
    • Mirror: an enchantment that deflects projectiles with full velocity instead of just bouncing off a shield.
    • Bouncing: an enchantment that deals more knockback to foes that hit it with a melee attack. This enchantment is mutually exclusive with Mirror, and has two levels.

Why remove diamond and netherite shields? Why not just nerf each shield?

I wouldnt say that kinda stuff because the shield is good how it is, and it is also very cheap. Being able to netheritefy a shield so it wouldnt burn in lava would be kinda better.

The turtle shield should block guardian lasers.

Personally I think that the shields should be individually craftable with the same recipe as the regular shield, but each replacing the wood with their respective items i.e. a diamond for a diamond shield, a scrap of netherite for a netherite shield, etc.
Also, I think the turtle shield should make the user faster in water, while the other shields slow the user down in water.
Otherwise, this is a great idea.

    Bad idea:
    1. Most of these ideas won't fit into the vanilla play style
    2. Shields aren't overpowered in early game because of the slowdown in PvE it's better to run than holding the shield most of the time and in pvp the shield is easy to counter via an axe

Considering that shields got nerfed a ton in the latest experimental snapshots, stronger tiers of shields are extremely important to have in the game.

But instead of using the common ores, we should give the other items in the game more spotlight. Copper, Amethyst, Turtle Scutes, or even an Enderite ore in the future. I love the idea of Turtle Shields. Stop forcing Minecraft to be hyper-realistic; it's a fantasy game with magic and three-headed exploding monsters, and it should stay as such.

Minecraft currently has a variety problem, in that players simply spam the strongest-tier equipment. Instead of a direct upgrade, shields can be less powerful than the strongest tier, but with additional effects like a Thorns Shield, or a shield that heals you when you get hit (but with very low durability).

ngl, i think we should stop focusing on these minor/creative ideas, because there are more important things that we should focus on, like how to make it so both legacy and latest version player would most likely rather pvp on the newest version. the fights in combat snapshot feel so random.
