The Netherite shield has an added perk for not burning in lava and fire. So by this idea, the shield would be renamed as Wooden Shield but with the same recipe, and obtaining the higher tiers require a Smithing Table with the material needed for upgrade.

EDIT: Diamond and Turtle have the same damage block but the turtle has perks. Consider changing these two.

I wouldn't say this is perfect and should be implemented exactly like this, but I like the way you're going with it.

I wouldn' like leather shield as not only is it not historically accurate but it doesn't make sense that a piece of leather can protect you from an arrow or a sword. Leather shouldn't be used for tools either. Smithing table should be used only for nntherite and further steps if they were to come. Diamond, gold, and other shields should be crafted the same way as the regular "iron" shield does.

I think instead of having shield tiers, they could add shield enchantments that do that instead.

    Why not both?

Leather shield being better than wood makes no sense to me, unless it's reinforcing the wood one

I would love to see different types of shields added in the game, especially since the regular shield got a downgrade in the combat tests. However, I think it's better to have all shields have the same recipe as the normal shield but replace the iron ingot with the material that the shield will be. As for a netherite shield however, you should be able to put a diamond shield with a netherite ingot in a smithing table, just like with all netherite tools/weapons/armor. Lets see it Mojang!

The idea of leather shields is it's a wooden shield reinforced by leather, and a tier between wood and iron.

This would definitely give smithing tables a better use, I say this should definitely make It In.

I just realized that this will affect the banner pattern attached to the shield. Assuming the upgrading via Smithing Table does not change the shape and size of the base Wooden Shield, you cannot see the type of material the shield is since it is covered by the banner pattern. To compensate for this, either the shield has to change size and/or shape.

I also suggest making the Tiered Shields be in a Upgrade Tree. Like shown in the image.

This way, as you get to Tier 3, it will be a situational upgrade. Going to Gold just ends there at Tier 3. Going to Scutes (Turtle) will branch you off to the Tier 4 Prismarine instead.
Prismarine will have an added perk of not getting a slow down as you activate a shield while completely submerged underwater.
The Damage Block for Diamond suggested by the OP should be increased by 1. As a result, Netherite's Damage Block is also increased by 1, with immunity to lava and fire as its added perks other than increased Knockback resistance.
Though I wish I can expand the Gold branch and Scute branch up to Tier 5 but I don't know what complements these.

Tier 1 and also 2 could mess up a little bit with the game progression, since you'll be able to negate every explosion damage just by punching a tree, or getting leather from cows.

Other than that, it seems balanced to me.

It would be cool that Turtle Shield and Prismarine Shield could give you an improved movement underwater.

I didn't think of the End Branch using End items. Thanks for that. So I just read on the conditions regarding ideas for this specific snapshot. Someone gather all the ideas mentioned here and just post it in another category outside the Experimental Combat Snapshot as the feedbacks here will be deleted once another update is released, if this isn't carried over the next snapshot.

Anyway, regarding the Fire Resist for the Nether branch and the Negation of Negative Potions for the End branch, this assuming that the shield is activated while at the offhand.

    a bit unbalanced?
plus, no need to require leather/turtle. plus diamond would be a downgrade??

BlueCreepersXD No, Diamond shields are more durable than turtle shields. I said in the post that higher tier shields are more durable than lower tier shields, and I also said that you need iron, gold or scute to upgrade. Make sure to read the post.

I made posts back in the day titled "More Shields" if people want even more shield variety, since we want tiered shields :)

I think I may know we could create shield diversity - turret shields and kite shields.

Going off the 'tiered shields' post, there should be 5 tiers for each shield, with 4 branches with their own special ability.

shields should vary with the following stats - reduction (for blocking damage), absorption (to reduce knockback), recoil (for shield disabling time) and skills. (something special about the shield.)

The turret shield Is a smaller, more generically shaped shield, crafted with less wood at It's starting wooden form. You can't give It a banner and negates less damage but It does have less recoil and can be used In the air. When upgraded to higher tiers, the shield Is covered In It's said material.

Of course, the kite shield Is the shield we have now, so no explanation Is required.

Both shields have 4 branches, but first must be upgraded to leather before you pick a branch, you start tier 3 with these Items:

    • Iron (ore branch - knockback resistance and decreased recoil)
    • Scute (sea branch - Increased water speed upon usage and will reflect arrows)
    • Gold - (Nether branch - grants fire resistance and the power to walk on lava)
    • Endstone - (has a 20% chance to reflect damage and will nullify all negative splash potions)

I'd like to hear your thoughts.

I think granting the Gold Shield branch the ability to walk on lava will defeat the purpose of the already existing Striders. How about we just make it so that you swim in lava faster instead because to be honest, lava is very viscous compared to water. So that will make the Gold Shield branch be able to pacify Piglins (except for Brutes) when active, grant Fire Resistance but only when you activate just to balance it out, and passively grants faster lava swimming as an opposite to the Scute branch for being themed around Water.

What about making the gold shield able to reflect blaze's and ghast's fire charges?

I don't thimk leather shields should be a thing but I really like the idea of turtle shilds, mabe it could have a diferent model to look more like a turtle shell

Looking back at the comments, I'd like to make some changes.

    1. Ditch what I said about walking on lava while using the shield. In short, I did notice how It ruined the Idea of striders (even though the lava walking was gonna be slow, making It more practical but a bit time consuming.), to replace that, all nether shields will be able to calm piglins when In the off-hand, and will be able to reflect fire charges.

    2. If we're gonna add stronger shields, stronger mobs or a form of stronger enemies would have to be added. My Idea would be to add "deviant mobs", a rare version of any neutral or hostile non-boss mob, Indicated with a red glow around the body. (kinda like charged creepers). They'd have extra health and gain extra new attacks to surprise or hinder players.

    3. To make sure we have extra ways to attack and disable shields by additional seconds, we could add special attacks: https://feedback.minecraft.net/hc/en-us/community/posts/360072752271-Special-attacks

There shouldn't be a gold shield that pacifies piglins, part of the sacrifice of putting on gold armor

Making a gold shield that pacifies piglins is akin to putting elytra in off-hand and letting you fly, allowing you to have a full set of armor for pvp

I can definitely see your concern regarding the Gold Shield branch pacifying Piglins, StrongTurnip656's. However as OP stated, the pacifying effect is only possible when you hold up the shield, a.k.a. activating it. Definitely not a reliable item for not getting noticed by Piglins as activating the shield hinders your movement. Even more problematic if you encounter a Brute, which not only ignores your Golden armaments but their axes will disable your shield, making you vulnerable to the Piglins nearby.

    Anyway, regarding
VirtuousStorm15's post on adding more things to equalize the Iron branch Tier, might I suggest into creating a new items that required 5 Blaze Powders and 3 Shulker shells for upgrading to make them similar to the upgrade items. Crafting 5 Blaze Powders and 4 Gold Nuggets will create Blaze Plate while Crafting 3 Shulker Shells will create a Shulker Plate, and these are used to upgrade the shields, respectively.

I do see your point, paul, It seems practical to make blaze and shulker plating, but adding those Items would probably have other players have more use for said plating. So I must use my example: It'd only make sense for plating to be added to armor for more durability, while also being used to make "armor parts" to customize the gear. This would mean Iron, gold, diamond, Ect. plating would be added.

Now another concern I have Is PVE. If we're gonna add stronger shields, we're gonna have to get stronger mobs to suppress shield usage a bit. My method would be the before-mentioned deviant mobs, or add new mobs AND have certain mobs that use shields. Think "Nekos" (the Nether's adorable, symbolic Illager counterpart), "revenants" (undead soldiers from the ancient ender dragon war), or even "Berserkers." (The royal guard of the Illager army), while giving piglins and some vindicators a shield as well. We could even add both concepts to minimize shield usage to a fair amount.

Of course, to balance shields In pvp, players (and MAYBE revenants and nekos) should be able to charge up special attacks to disable shields for additional seconds and (probably) even stun their target. (revenants and nekos would probably have randomized specials... If you don't get what I mean, why not look at my Post?)

Overall, If we go by these terms and these Ideas are executed right, everything should work out In a balanced manner.

Ex: As paul said, brutes can basically make you vulnerable to piglins.

I don't like the idea of the turtle shield. Turtle shells were basically meant to tell that the shells that turtles have help them breath for longer underwater, that's why there is not a full set of turtle armor. It would not make sense.

Tiers could be literally just replacing wood in the crafting recipe or upgrading through a smithing table, but I think it should be optional. Allowing the player to skip a tier if desired, but it would require more materials of the type the player is upgrading to. Example:

Player: has wooden shield, wants to skip to iron,

Could upgrade with one cobblestone and one iron ingot with smithing table

Could upgrade with seven iron ingots and no cobblestone with crafting table

The player has the choice, though this choice is not too hard to decide lol.

Even on current minecraft, shields aren't good at endgame. Making shield tiers is just making a shield that its trash in endgame and too expensive in earlygame to be worth it. Ín current versions they protect 100% damage and they're not even good at endgame, just a tactical tool for earlygame. Basing shields to numbers is a very bad idea because it make same tier swords useless but above tier swords unbeatable, and mobs can go from doing nothing to basically ignore the fat that you have shields even with 10 stat blocking ones. The best option is, however, make different kinds of shields, with different functionality, like one that block 50% of damage and can be raised at anytime and another one that blocks 100% o damage but you need to have your attack charged for that.

Agreed, and I think they should add a enchant called reflection, which reflects projectiles back at the attacker.
