I think it should still add a bit less damage than Sharpness (on land) but I do think this would be nice.

RedSol6419 Maybe Impaling V could deal 2 damage on land, but 6 damage in water? Like impaling adding 1 damage at level 1, 1.5 damage at level 3, and 2 damage at level 5. Either way, there should at least be some benefit to impaling on land.

I agree with RedSol. It should be something like 0.3-0.4 per level, so maxed out trident still deals less damage than a maxed out netherite sword(8.5-9 vs 10)

A nice idea for those trident styled fighters. But it should be less powerful than sharpness but OP underwater.

Or, we could buff a bit sharpness and leave impaling like how sharpness is now but with the buff underwater.

Would this effect players? If so, then I'm not so sure about having a trident with reach and double damage.

Impaling is currently a strong enchantment, since it increases damage when you are on rain, storm, or touching a water block (not necesarily being underwater).

Also, it's stronger than sharpness, and tridents are very difficult to find, so this is fine.

I would make some interesting battle encounters where your combatant finds you to be in the water but since you have an impaling enchant he would be at a disadvantage so he either chooses to fight on or uses a bow or let you run if you are low hp.

With the new combat update tridents will only deal 7 damage.  This could add 5 damage so it is the same as a netherite sword.  This would help tridents because they would have same damage and longer reach while swords can have sweeping edge, fire aspect, and knockback, so the two balance out.

Impaling is meant to be akin to Smite and Bane of Arthropods.

the +6 attack dmg is wayy too high as it would be dealing a solid 13 attack dmg when even a netherite axe with cleaving 3 would only do 12 with less reach. maybe just make it so it gets the +3 overall dmg and a swing speed buff of 2.5 increasing its dps but not its overall dmg

In Update Aquatic in Legacy, Impaling had the ability to one tap any mob touching water (most of them). I am unsure if it is still the same but it appeared to have no effect on mobs on land. This might have just been my edition.
