Well, you see, there's this thing called durability. No, seriously. Wooden swords break very fast. It may not affect early-game PvP, but it's really annoying to run around killing mobs with a sword that constantly loses durability. I think there's enough incentive to make a stone sword.
I'm not saying I would dislike this change. It just does not seem that important to me.

the only reason why stone was lowered down to wood tier was because stone is not hard to get at all. It's just slightly harder to get, and it already has double the durability. Giving it one extra damage makes no sense and would make the wood sword pretty much useless.

John Chen, imagine being hit with a wooden club and then with a stone one, and then tell me again why it makes no sense. A wooden sword is significantly lighter and softer than stone, so not only does it have significantly less force behind it, it can't be properly sharpened like stone so it's basically just a decorative stick. So yes, a wooden sword should do less damage than stone. It should be useless.

I say that the gold sword should be very effective, since the gold tools do mine really fast, at the extreme cost of durability.

Java Dragon @John Chen In servers like hypixel where they make all tools unbreakable, durability is irrelevant. The combat tests are targeted towards servers for them to update, so it's wrong to think about how it'll impact survival. We should think about how they affect multiplayer.

Although I strongly disagree with Ender Host's numbers. Wooden swords does half a heart more than your fist in 1.9? I don't believe all weapons should be incredibly weak like that.

The wooden sword should deal 4 hearts of damage,

    Stone, 4.5,

    Iron, 5,

    Diamond, 6

    Netherite, 7.

Stone, Iron and Diamond swords should also deal more critical damage compared to Wooden, and Netherite deals the most critical damage. (I wrote another feedback about critical hits)

Ender Host, plus 1 for the idea, but I really disagree with those numbers. Imagine punching something 2 times then smacking something once with a sharpened stick. Obviously the stick does more damage. As you've mentioned in a comment, yes I also see no problem with wooden swords being useless. Not all items in minecraft has to be perfectly used. Inevitably, some are going to be more useful than others.

thomas bonser in my opinion I think gold swords and tools have a low durability because in real life gold is a very soft material and is easy to break. Then again, why base real facts in games. PS: Diamond is also easy to break kinda

You are completely ignoring the attack cooldown. The dps of fist would be higher than that of a wooden sword. Swords hit slightly slower than half a second, so if you time your hits, fists actually deal more damage than wooden swords in your scenario if you time your hits the correct way and hit something 2 times a second.

What about axes? Do wooden axes start with 3 attack damage? That would betray your philosophy.

I don't know, this seems like a mistake of someone who's rarely tried 1.9. I could be wrong though.

I'm thinking punching should be 1/2 heart, but attacking with an item in your hand (anything that isn't a bare fist) would do more damage, maybe 1 full heart.
I'm not sure about the numbers about the swords, either. Something about them doesn't seem right, idk.

The proper way for Mojang to implement damage would be similar to Legacy and Bedrock, with wooden and gold swords dealing 5 damage, stone dealing 6, iron dealing 7, diamond dealing 8 and netherite dealing 9. Axes deal 1 less damage, pickaxes 2, shovels 3 and hoes 4.
