Currently, Huge Mushrooms can only be grown on dirt, coarse dirt, grass block, podzol, and mycelium. With the upcoming Nether update, it would be beneficial to also have them grow on the new block nylium, or other fitting blocks in the Nether. Currently, there is no way to grow a huge mushroom with any blocks naturally found in the Nether.
For someone doing a challenge of surviving exclusively in the Nether, or trying to escape it, the most tedious part of it is the food. Having to scavenge for mushrooms or start a farm for the small ones is needlessly time consuming.
Finding a fortress to kill Skeletons or Wither Skeletons for bones to make bonemeal is fun, and is balanced for growing Warped/Crimson fungi for wood. It would be a similar process for mushrooms, and thus also fun.
This was inspired by the fact that I finished a snapshot 20w16a playthrough where I started in the Nether and then escaped. It was super fun, minus the mushroom farming. Searching for a Nether Fortress, a Ruined Portal, flint and steel, and diamond loot for a pickaxe was challenging but a fantastic experience. The food farming was not, especially with how much was needed in hard difficulty.
The addition/tweak would be simple, beneficial, and thematic to the game.
