Unlock new crafting/ smelting slots by crafting/smelting stuff

To unlock the extra 2 crafting and smelting slots you would craft items. 1 hour of crafting/ smelting to unlock the second and 5-10 hours for the third. This would be a good way to introduce these new slots. At first I was thinking you'd have to craft a certain number of items but then I realized people could just craft a load of sticks. I hope you like my idea!
