I think this would be a great change! It adds a choice; do you choose to have quicker attacks, or have a totem/shield? Needless to say, swords would have to be able to be held in your offhand in bedrock edition.

Wow... How have I never thought of this? I love it! This is great, definitely a vote from me. It makes perfect sense, and would be well balanced. The only thing is, shields would need to be slightly buffed from what they are if this is implemented. If you're dual-wielding a sword and an axe then you would destroy someone with a sword and shield.

Yes, the shield should be buffed then.

What about making armors weaker and make the shield add armor value? This way, using 2 weapons will be still risky, as you will have less armor than those using shields.

I don't think shields would need to be buffed. If someone were to wield an ax and a sword, they would be easy to hit with projectiles like arrows. And, sword/shield users would still be able to attack back with their sword for the time their shield is disabled.

I don't know, could be a little (a lot) over-powered. I like the idea of dual-wielding like this, but I'd want the offhand weapon to deal something like 75% damage or maybe have nerfed enchants.

Great Idea! Though instead of a percentage, it should just be a flat damage reduction. The speed or reach of the weapon could be changed as well. There's a "when in main hand" section of the weapon stats, so it's probably possible to add a "when in offhand" part as well. Maybe it could be different stats entirely depending on what the developers think is fair.

    How?
Weapons are getting a damage reduction and we're further discussing reducing their damage while in the offhand slot. I'd say it's a fair trade to sacrifice a shield in order to strengthen offensive capability.

Sounds great, it's the usual "berserker build" in most games, sacrificing defense/range for raw meelee damage

it really has a place, specially since there's invulnerability frames wich would prevent it from getting too OP (2 diamond swords swinging at once sounds crazy deadly)

it also allows for pre1.8 fanboys to go back to spam clicking, they don't like shields anyway so there's no reason for them not to choose this

I dont think this would fit. The damage for weapons has to be nerfed then

This is op, then, to fix it, they should make a mechanic that is: while you attack with both hands your hunger bar will drecrease 3x or 2x times faster

What about attacking With your main hand and offhand at the same time to deal a combo of both weapons attack damage, this could be done by holding the attack button instead of clicking it

I think that if this is implemented it needs to be nerfed a lot. Maybe slowing the player when he is attacking with the Off-Hand? It makes sense as it is the non-dominant hand.

Yeah! I think that could work. Having a longer cooldown for the item in the offhand sounds reasonable, though that would be weird for ambidextrous people. Could work, could not, ultimately I don't think this would affect combat too much.

Most people don't realize that the damage invincibility cooldown prevents this from being super duper strong. If one weapon hits, your other would fail guaranteed. But, if your main weapon misses, (which will happen eventually) your off hand gets a chance.

Actually, that means this idea is almost the same as "if you miss your attack, the cooldown is cut in half." It would essentially increase your accuracy as a result.

IDrac360I makes a good point. I have personally never really been in favor of the 'if you miss, attack cooldown is halved' thing. However, now you can basically have that, but you trade off a shield. This would probably be relatively balanced, though I don't know because it would be impossible to test in Vanilla Minecraft.

This would Indeed be a wonderful Idea, as Invincibility frames prevent this mechanic from breaking the game, and If we had the berserker effect for axe builds (you can check that out on feedback) and duel wielding for swords, a whole new world Is opened. If you hit a player with an axe a few times, you get a strength and speed boost, but with swords, It’s good with accuracy and gives you a chance to get a second hit If you want to, and It’s optional. Perhaps a charge attack for the main hand sword or axe could advance this further depending one where the developers take It, my Ideas would be an Input system for main hand weapons. Which could be a lunge by running and holding the attack button for escaping and a stationary spin attack by staying where you are and holding the attack button that allows us to escape being cornered. We should have a slight degrade of damage from the off-hand weapon compared to a main hand weapon, so It’s less overpowered, even though frame negation and my before-hand mentioned charged attacks for the main hand make this balanced enough. To Conclude, these 3 Ideas of charged attacks, the berserker effect for the main hand axe, a small Group of Input attacks, and a off hand sword could make the combat more fresh and unique.

Very much liked the idea, and after reading all comments i think that just halving the weapon damage in the off-hand would be enough (or may be 60%), that way a Diamond sword in your off hand would deal 3 damage (or 4 if the reduction is to 60%) exactly what you need to finish things off more quickly and effectively balancing things for the shield users.

So essentially there would be two cooldowns? This is actually a great idea. I also think that there would have to be a balance to it so that it doesn't just become overpowered - For instance, maybe weapon cooldowns could to be slightly slower, or, like others have commented, the offhand weapon should be nerfed. At the very least, there should be a window where the dual-wielder cannot attack after double-clicking, so you wouldn't be able to spam-click - You'd have to establish a "rhythm" instead.
