Mining in Minecraft is too easy. Make a wooden pickaxe for 3 stone, get some iron, and go down to Y 10 to find diamonds within 1 hour. Most players skip searching caves and go straight down. TNT is never used for mining, which is a shame.
Introducing stone “Hardness”(HN), stone has 6 levels of Hardness, 5 of which can be found underground in the overworld, each HN lvl has its own Y lvl section. Higher HN lvls take more food to mine, influenced by the material you are using.
HN lvl height division(1-2 blocks randomness)
5=Low Nether(between Ancient Debris)
Each material has its own mining HN lvl
In each HN tier the corresponding pickaxe material and materials from lower HN tiers are found(Coal is untouched). You need to use the previous tier pickaxe to find the material of the next tier, which takes a lot of (special?)food. This could also be done with TNT mining.(viable now!)
Finding the next tier material should be hard but rewarding. People in the late game don’t want to deal with eating food all the time.
Pickaxe HN compared to stone HN:
2 lower, mining not possible, no tier skipping
1 lower: 1/5 a slice per block
Same tier: 1/30 p/b
1 higher:1/60 p/b
2 higher: None
Balancing the food issues: new food type with a special effect, food penalties are cut in half, made from 4 types of meat(Good reason to farm multiple food types)
HN 0 stone cannot be used to craft a pickaxe.
