Yes definitely, as far as I can tell you can currently get basically everything you need to survive in the nether currently except for stone. If not basalt than some other way of getting stone

i was thinking basalt should get the same treatment that granite and diorite got with stairs and walls and stuff, but furnaces would be cool and useful as well

One of the main goals of the nether update was to make it possible to survive solely in the nether without going into the overworld. This is a big part of why they are adding new types of wood and what-not to the nether. I think it would be cool if you could make a set of "Nether" tools by combining netherrack and basalt in specific patterns like having netherrack on the outsides of a pickaxe pattern and having basalt in the middle. I think this would make a cool stone tier tool for the nether.

I really enjoy this idea.  That way you can make a furnace to cook hoglin meat, and to smelt ancient debris

I don't think basalt should be like that, straight up replacing stone in a crafting, I think it'd be cool if it had its own set of bricks/stairs/slabs etc... like they did for granite, andesite and diorite.

I agree that basalt should be more than decorative block. And this looks like very interesting purpose of this block. If not directly use it in crafting, maybe some recipe in combination with gravel will give cobblestone. Or just put basalt in furnace and bake it into stone

I think it would make more sense if you could just craft basalt into stone tbh

Adding basalt as an alternative for cobblestone in crafting recipes would be great! I've tried to create a nether exclusive survival, but I always find myself without an important material: stone. Unfortunately, stone can only be obtained in the overworld, so if I wanted to craft a furnace to cook pork chops, I can't. If I wanted to create better tools than wood tools without finding a nether fortress to get iron, I can't. If I wanted to smelt the new nether gold ore or ancient debris, I can't. I always find myself finding basalt practically everywhere, but there is no use for them other than as a building block. Basalt is technically stone, so it would make sense if it were to be used in crafting recipes as a replacement to cobblestone. Adding this feature would make surviving exclusively in the nether more possible and maybe if I find myself needing to craft a furnace or a stone sword in the nether, I CAN.

Hope basalt can be broken down into cobblestone.

If this does not come to fruition, then i propose another idea: perhaps the upcoming Bastion structures that house the piglins will also come with basalt/netherrack/etc furnaces (perhaps that cannot be crafted).  Breaking one of these will result in the piglins becoming aggressive.

With this new furnace, you should be able to turn stems (warped and crimson) into charcoal, in order to make campfires to cook hoglin meat.

With a way to cook hoglin meat (whatever that eventually may be), this can make it so that the nether could actually be an option for what dimension you spawn in (albeit very challenging).

Perhaps hoglin meat can be tossed into lava, and then float back out as its cooked variant (i am not sure how this would be coded).  Or maybe piglins have a chance to barter a sword with the "flame" enchantment, so you can cook the hoglin meat when you kill one.  This would be balanced since you would not have an easy time trying to repair this weapon (you'd need to barter a LOT of iron nuggets to make an anvil)

Yeah. Wasn't making Nether habitable the main goal of the update?

Now that we have respawn anchors, this is the lone thing that prevents survival in the nether. PLEASE add this mojang!

Funny enough I was just about to post the same thing. This would be great for actually being able to get stone tools and furnaces in the nether, and it does make sense, considering how similar it is to cobblestone.

Maybe, instead, four gravel in the crafting table formation could be turned into two cobblestone?

I think this is a very good idea. Basalt has not really gotten a use yet in the nether update, apart from decoration. Adding Basalt Furnaces would be great, as well as basalt stairs, slabs and walls. As for tools, I think there is a case to be made for a new tier of tools obtainable solely in the nether, as right now, we only have wood and gold. This addition would turn the nether into a liveable, more difficult version of the overworld, which would add a whole new aspect to the game.

This is a perfect way to solve the no-stone-in-the-nether issue. Players stranded in the nether (for whatever reason) could go one tier higher than wood/gold without having to venture into those deadly fortresses. You usually need to bridge out into lava pools to reach basalt spires, so it would still be more difficult to get than wood or gold.

exactly, like what if you are STARTING in the nether. "What's that, you want a furnace...you'll have to get 10 obsidian and a flint and steel first." (which I actually did)

I think a new tool set for basalt could be added, that's very slightly better than cobblestone. It could also replace stone swords as the weapon of choice for wither skeletons.

Being able to use Basalt as an alternative for Stone/Cobblestone crafting would be amazing. Or at least introduce Basalt variants for everything that Stone/Cobblestone can craft. (When considering tools, all stats equivalent to Stone stats).

I made a survival world in the snapshots where I started in the Nether, and noticed very quickly how much harder everything was without access to a furnace... So, if not all stone crafting recipes, at least furnaces, levers and brewing stands. It's kind of weird how the art of brewing potions originated in the Nether and yet it requires an Overworld block to function (it goes without saying that it also requires water and yet piglins carry potions of fire resistance, but that's a separate discussion entirely.)

Yeah, what if players want to do their entire survival adventure in the nether? Even with the new updated nether, it would be hard without cobblestone. Even though piglins DO trade iron nuggets to craft into iron, sometimes we just really need furnaces.

Yes this is a brilliant idea, this would make it possible to smelt ancient debris and get Netherite gear in a Nether only challenge.
