The current implementation of Netherite tools and armor sounds good at first as a step up from diamond, but is even more difficult to upgrade and maintain to the point where using it for anything other than PVP and Bosses without mending would likely be a waste of resources. Not to mention being largely unnecessary when enchanted diamond equipment is often more than enough to survive mobs, falls, tool breaking, etc.
If Netherite gear didn't require diamond, and scraps were a cheaper, renewable resource (Piglin trades) with statistics between iron and diamond while still preserving it's unique attributes, it could be a very good set to use as an alternative to diamond for mining, Nether exploration, and general use. Diamond would retain its status as the most powerful (and expensive) while Netherite could be more practical for routine activities via relative ease of replacement, enchanting, etc in comparison.
