they added custom item and block models together with resource packs back in 1.7

then they added custom entity model support in 1.9

why custom armour isn't a vanilla thing yet I don't know, I mean forge allows you to do this with your own armour(Draconic Evolution being the first to come to mind).

Optifine also doesn't add this in, this isn't such a hard thing to do and would make a great addition for custom maps resource packs and servers.

Currently, there is a way to manipulate helms and other items with damage values.

That armor isn't possible is still a miracle.

I wouldnt even mind making 7 models.

    Boots - 2

    Legs - 2

    Arms - 2

    Body - 1

    We need this!

Wait, helmets can't be changed to 3D models on the head, can they?

This would be the best and most necessary addition for all resource pack authors and custom item fanatics. I love tinkering with custom items on my Spigot server, but to make new armor textures, I would need Optifine. And just imagine 3D armor...nothing new in modding, but Vanilla? That would be a blessing...

Resource packs desperately need this feature, we can customize items, so why not armor!

This would do so much for resource packs. You could make endless combinations of equippable items and players could customize their characters infinitely. Imagine having hundreds of different hats, shirts, pants and shoes that you can buy, find and trade for.

It would let servers be much more unique, and would just add so much depth. This is far more important than adding any specific content to the game as it would let modders easily add tons themselves. This is the biggest hole in the resource pack / datapack system.

estaría bueno, además en los servidores servirían para diferenciar los clanes o alianzas y también se vería muy épico.

After trying this for a while, I found that many people in minecraft communities are seriously confused about how to change armor models. It's really sad that we still cannot change armor models via resource pack

If custom armor models become a thing they should also have custom model data like items do, or at least damage variants. Please do this for entities too, this would allow us map makers and server owners very happy since we could fully manipulate things in a creative aspect. If you are worried about hitboxes technically any player could just turn off the resource pack in server settings. We can already apply models to items and put them on heads so why not allow us to edit entitys like bedrock edition and armour?

This could improve a lot resource packs, as new armors can be done!

It seems like vanilla armor is still mostly just layering on top of the skin, however, with items like carved pumpkins being able to apply custom models to a head slot, it seems as though the inability to apply custom models to armors has just been an oversight. Critically, this would allow for custom armors with relevant game stats, such as armor toughness, durability, knockback, etc., as well as vanilla enchantments.

Change the armor models will be a game changer for datapacks makers; so adding the opportunity to make 3D models will be awesome. In parallel, just change the texture with something like CustomModelData will be a great improvement!

Please add this feature into next major version of Minecraft, so that we can build better servers and adventure maps that are friendly to vanilla players who do not have mods like Optifine or Content Tweaker installed.

Considering you can modify the CustomModelData of items and make practically anything you can dream up through the clever use of what is a remodeled gold nugget and some armor stand magic, being able to assign a custom model to armor, shields, tridents, and other 3D "items" should be made possible.

You can already change vanilla armor and the items, but it was disappointing to find out custom models on the player are impossible without the use of a 3rd-party modification such as OptiFine.

This change should be considered parity, and personally I would be making great use of something like this if it were to be added. Shields and tridents would also be really nice too! <3

I really hope to see this feature in 1.20 update.

    This would be great.

What I have been doing to get around this is creating a datapack that uses a re-modeled warped fungus on a stick to put on your head. This works but one needs to manually create normal helmet functions such as enchantments and durability, and it gets increasingly complicated. Plus i doubt it would animate correctly for chestpieces, leggings and boots. All-in-all this suggestion would be amazing.

IDK why this isn't a thing already since there is a community-made shader that can do this. Doesn't work quite like you would want since it uses dyed leather armor to decide custom texture, but I think that kinda shows that it's definitely possible for the Mojang devs to add. Would go super well with the new Component Crafting System!!

Custom Armor Models are probably one of the most requested item related features and yet still not in-game, despite it probably being one of the most useful things Mojang could add (alongside a way to directly affect player motion, like a command).

If I had to add one thing to datapacks and resource packs, it would easily be this, by far.
