With the Nether Update adding more under-worldly places to explore, surely that can’t exclude the expanses of the Nether’s lava lakes. So once players are given a new way to cross the lava they should encounter exclusive new sights and of course new mobs, but what would they be like? This post will be focusing on a concept I’ve developed for a lava-swimming mob: the Scalder.
It could have dark scales, similar in color to the Magma Cube’s coating, and its shape could be a cross between a large anglerfish and a not-so-cute dolphin. It wouldn’t have a lure dangling from its head like real anglerfish; this mob is meant to move swiftly through and above lava.
Attack: when the Scalder sees a player from 10 blocks away, it will start skipping across the lava towards them. When close enough, it will then leap overhead like a dolphin, and burn the player with lava particles trailing behind it. The player can also be damaged if they bump into the Scalder. The player’s method of defense would be to cancel the overhead leap with their sword, or to push them back with arrows while the Scalder is skipping towards them.
Other Behaviors: Scalders will ignore players standing on solid blocks, but they can be pulled on land with fishing rods. They will not take damage when outside the lava for long periods of time, and will just flop around. However, they can get stuck to soul sand, as though the block is pulling them in.
Drops: Usually if the player kills the Scalder on land, they can acquire 1-2 Scalder Scales. Get 4 scales, and you can craft 2 Scalder Pelts. Pelts can be placed on the ground or hung on walls for decoration. However, when hung against a wall surface, they have additional functionality. When hung in front of an empty space, much like a banner, their front sides (not their back sides) can deflect projectiles. (this section is open to revision. Comment below on what drops you think this mob should have)
