A lot of AR games refuse to do this as it encourages "cheating". It is not a combat game so to collect extra tappables would not destroy any balance in the game.
This would allow disabled people to move around.

Even a bigger circle would help with this

I think this kind of gets rid of the Earth aspect of the game and just makes it a Minecraft game with a very unpronounced environment. Having to physically move around is what makes the game.

I agree, that would help people with disabilities to play the game, but as others have said, that would basically turn this into regular Minecraft, and they may as well play that...

I have a lot of time to spend playing games in 5-10 minute increments. I have almost no time, think less than 1 hour/week, to wander around my neighborhood looking for minecraft stuff and it's not safe to do so anyway.
I played PoGo for a month and it was fun until life caught up with me. Then I started using navigation apps with it and I was able to play all the time. I interacted with other players, joined local communities, and spent money on in-game content. I was also able to be competitive with players who are able to play all the time and have less responsibilities. Once navigation started breaking all the time, I stopped playing. The newer Wizarding World app was the same. I just don't have the resources to be constantly walking around playing these kinds of games. But I still want to enjoy them, because of the level of interactive content they provide.

TL;DR: Navigation is the best way to involve working/responsible people to interact with and spend money on your app.

Edit: to the other commenters. This game is hardly full minecraft, and would having a global minecraft server be so bad? That's the allure of this game.

I think free ranging makes this a different game. Mojang may do well to consider a completely different spinoff from this game to suit the audiences who want it. Note, the audiences aren't mutually exclusive.
