I have an idea about a "dog title", which is a craft-able item that will change a dog's size and shape depending on which of the four groups they would be assigned to: Guarding, herding, hunting/tracking, and service. Each group has their own unique mechanic that allows them to do their job. I feel like they should all share coat colors instead of being specific breeds, and if they don't have a "dog title" they remain the default skin.
I didn't want people to discriminate about certain dog breeds, nor did I want people to be upset that their breed didn't get in. Just having to make coat patterns for 3-4 different sizes of dog instead of having to do an array of completely different dog shapes sounds easier to me.
- Guard dogs: Whenever an aggressive mob comes near, it will defend it's owner.
- Herding dogs: Livestock animals named by the player will follow this dog. When there are holes in the ground or mobs attack the player, the dog will "herd" the livestock away to avoid fatalities.
- Hunting/tracking dogs: Throw an item at them, and they will lead you to more of that item in a certain radius dependent on "nose strength", which smell up to 15-50 block radius.
- Service dogs: When there are 5+ agressive mobs surrounding the player, they release a knockback bark that dazes the mobs for a second. It doesn't lower health, it just gives the player a moment to breathe and it has a 15-20 minute cooldown.
