I'm a little unsure about the way you get into crawl mode (with trapdoors/pistons/etc...). For mapmaking sake, there should be a gamerule toggle for this new feature.
My worry is how getting in/out of crawl mode works. Many maps use trapdoors as decoration (and other things that don't want the crawling mechanic) There are also piston traps. You'd want the machine to crush and kill you, not make you crawl). Just a worry. A gamerule may be better?
Something like "/gamerule playerCrawling [true/false]" - this would disable the mechanic when opening a trapdoor would push you down, or getting pushed by pistons/blocks would take you into crawl mode.
Of course, because this would be a command, you could toggle it in certain parts of maps with commandblocks, which would be even more useful!
(This would not affect other methods of crawling like swimming through a 1 block gap/tunnel or flying into a small space with an elytra. All this would toggle would be the use of crawling via trapdoors/pistons/blocks).
Thanks for reading! I'd love to hear what you have to say regarding this.
