It is obvious that the community wants magic to be added to the game but how should the developer go about adding it? The system should appeal to the fundamental aspects of the Minecraft experience:
Why does magic come from?
Spells are cast via a collection of books called tomes. Tomes with a variety of spells are shattered across the Minecraft world, in existing and new structures.
It would be interesting to have a variant of the enchanting table (maybe the recipe replaces obsidian with a non-overworld material). This workbench would be used to create new tomes.
How does the player cast spells?
Tomes are used much like weapons/tools. You either wack your target with the book or aim and charge. Instead of consuming durability, tomes use lapis as ammo. Lapis is already used for magical acts like enchanting. The lapis ammo must be in the offand to prevent the player from accidentally consuming lapis which was not meant for spellcasting.
Lapis should be more abundant within underwater caves to assist with the cultivation of ammo. There is currently no incentive to choose flooded caves over regular ones.
