The addition of swimming in 1.13 has opened the door for many more combat maneuvers. The ones that I’ve thought of so far are Blocking, Dodging and Crawling. For a combat and Nether update, such features could really help spruce up the game and create new ways to fight opponents, be they mobs or other players.
Blocking: Blocking with a sword used to be a thing, but it was removed and replaced with shields in 1.9. However, in real life, a sword can be used to block attacks just as well as a shield so I’ve come up with some ideas to make it stand out from blocking with a shield. Firstly, swords would only be able to block attacks from mobs carrying melee weapons. So in other words, you could block an attack from a zombie with an iron sword or shovel, a wither skeleton, zombie pigman and vindicator and so on, but not from a zombie without a sword or a skeleton with a bow. An advantage of the sword though would be that while blocking, the player’s speed would not be decreased as with shields. Ultimately, the shield would remain the better blocking device, however, swords would pay off for players who just started a new world and don’t yet have access to iron to make shields. Another mechanic that could be added into this would be durability. For example, it makes sense that a wooden sword would have trouble blocking a diamond one, or an iron axe. So in this case, the wooden sword would lose multiple durability points. Each weapon would have a slightly different relationship with other weapons, making inter-weapon combat much more interesting and diverse.
Dodging: A really helpful movement to activate when being charged by some kind of giant mob (cough, cough, Ender Dragon, cough.) The key for this on Java Edition could be the E key plus a directional key. The player would leap to the side, avoiding any damage if it’s timed right. The movement would also have a cooldown of at least one second, to make players think strategically in battle.
Crawling: Pressing the Z key would make the player drop to the ground, effectively making yourself a much smaller target. With this feature, mobs would have to be much closer to notice you, allowing you to sneak away (Anyone who has been ambushed by Wither Skeletons knows how valuable such a move could be.) While crawling, your speed is even lower than blocking with a shield. Another drawback of being in a crawling position is that you cannot attack with any melee weapons. However, you will still be able to place blocks and fire bows and crossbows (Sniping has reached an all new level) Also, when crawling, you can still dodge, resulting in a roll. If you are on fire, rolling like this would put out the flames (Stop, drop and roll.)
These three movements would give you much more freedom in combat and make players think strategically in combat instead of just rushing blindly into battle and pressing the attack key continuously.
This final post also concludes my series of ideas for 1.15, the Turn and Burn Update, which focuses on the Nether and Combat, two features of the game that need a lot of updating.
Hope you liked them.
