Unlike enchanting, enhancing gives the player control of the features of the elytra. The way an elytra is enhanced is through an ender alter. Ender alters act like enchanting tables because they have to requirements:
1. End rods. End rods are how the alter gets power just like how the enchanting table does with bookshelves.
2. Eyes of ender. The eyes of ender act as the lapis of the alter.
Once all requirements are met, you can place your elytra in the GUI. You can also place tomes in the other two slots. Elytras can have up to two enhancements. There are six times each with their own enhancements.
Tomes are found rarely in the world, each with a special enhancement bound to them. These tomes are:
Steelwing tome - found in mansions- the steelwing tome gives the elytra razor-sharp edges, so swooping down on another player or even a horde of mobs will cause damage.
Meteor tome - found in nether fortresses - the meteor tome has two effects on the elytra. When faced straight down, you will gain more speed and will start to catch on fire (with flame effects like riptide trident) this can cause fire damage to mobs when paired with steelwing. The meteor tome also gives you the unique power to cause a large shockwave on a head-on collision. The shockwave harms mobs with a decent amount of damage, but you will be left with little hp.
Sonic boom tome - found in end cities - the sonic boom tome is interesting. As you build up energy during flight, you’ll get closer to a sonic boom. When the sonic boom meter is full, you can use a rocket to activate it. It will launch you up to 5x faster and will cause a shockwave that disables enemy’s elytra for a second or two. Helpful for getting away.
Reverse whirlpool tome - found in sea temples - this tome makes you propel faster after using riptide.
Lifting tome - found in dungeons - this tome makes it easier go gain altitude.
Feather tome - found in jungle temples - gives you added speed and menueverabiliry depending on how many parrots are near you.
