I don't think they should be males but just a mob variant like how the husk is to the zombie. The herding and protector behavior is interesting. You mentioned bulls and a made a post about that

I think that in order to breed animals you should have to have both variants.

I really like this idea except for the fact that you would have to have both variations in order to breed them. Like if you have a Male but no female, you'd have to go find a female.

That would be weird and sexist since that's not how the animal world works, it's just a human-imagined idea.

Alpha wolves aren't real and the scientist who invented that term regrets ever coining it.

Female lions are in charge of their clans (like meercats) and males are transitory for breeding and are kicked out when no longer suitable. (sorry I know it's rough, nature is harsh).

    See bees, whales, etc.

Many of our human assumptions about male dominance/protection are just simply untrue.

I like this. It would add a bit of a challenge to breeding. Getting set up in Minecraft feels a bit too easy. So I don't think adding male animals would hurt Minecraft. It would add to the experience of trying to keep a male and a female animal. Like "Ok I got a cow, now I need to go tame a bull" instead of "I just need 2 cows and I'm good."

Male and Female Villagers would make life harder though. Imagine all the females dying in your village. You'd just have to pray a female zombie villager stumbles upon your village so you can cure it. But even so, I think that would add more to the game.
