I made a few customized servers myself on Java edition.  It was hard, but it is possible to eliminate all errors from a server that are the fault of the server.

I agree. Why should we pay on Java but not on console or Bedrock?

I personally don't have any problem with running a server.

    @Blast Burner

First of all you do NOT have to pay anything to host a Minecraft server (but you might have to pay for the server).

Second of all, you do have to pay on Xbox/ps4 a monthly subscription to play online (AFAIK)

@Xavier Hervy You just said that you do NOT have to pay anything to host a Minecraft server but you just then said but you might have to pay for the server.

@Blast Burner  Sorry, I was not clear enough.

I host a local server for Minecraft for my kids. This is on my computer, in my home, with a port forwarding so that his cousin can play with them. In that case I don't have to pay anything.

But if you do not want to host yourself, then you have the possibility to rent a server if you wish to.

@Xavier Hervy Thank you for being more clear Xavier. I was confused at first but now I understand more. I hope that you and your family have a great time on Minecraft. :D

Hosting a Java Edition multiplayer server is not as easy as it should be and this needs to change. Bedrock Edition is far superior for being able to play with your friends online as it handles the technical stuff automatically. Hosting a Java Edition server requires more knowledge and maintenance. Even if you port forward and get the server running successfully, you will need to reconfigure your server if your IP address changes. Non-technical people do not know how safe port forwarding is or how to keep the network secure while port forwarding. Playing Java Edition with your friends should only require a few clicks regardless of whether you are using Minecraft Realms or not.

They should convert Mojang accounts to Java, and integrate the friend system and Xbox live multiplayer on top of servers and LAN

Yes. Minecraft Bedrock has such easy multiplayer: you load up a world and - Boom! Your friends can join. On Java, it's not that simple. It's not simple at all! You either have to be on the same network as a friend or create a server - a very complicated process. I just wish Java had the same multiplayer as Bedrock.

If Minecraft PC added some sort of global friend system, this could definitely work, and under "Host LAN" could maybe me "Host World", and then you'd choose:

    • Host to friends (Invite only)
    • Host to friends (public)
    • Host to LAN

I think all of those options are self explanatory enough.

Then of course you'd be prompted with your usual allow cheats, default gamemode etc.

    Just my 2 cents

Not many people actually know this, but you can make hosting a server WAAAY easier by not doing the port forwarding and instead using ngrok. I used it for a long time and me and my friends have never had a problem! :D Just search for a good tutorial and you and your friends are ready to go!

I know right? It's ridiculous that Mojang prides Minecraft on being multiplayer friendly while in reality the only way to play multiplayer is either buy a realm for $7.99, or spend ages setting up a server (I literally tried to explain all the steps but there were too many characters) and that's the way it's been literally since 1.0 was released. All Java accounts are linked with Microsoft, which means your Xbox friends could be the ones to join your Java world. They already showed off that this could be possible with the Chat Report Feature. There are already a ton of mods which make the Open to LAN function online, and it's actually easier to install the mod than set up the server which is quite sad. If you ask the average Java player what their opinion on this is, they'd say they're perfectly happy the way it is, but the only reason they say that is because the average Java player is either a techno wizard, they play with their siblings with Open to LAN, or they just play single-player (Just like some replies above me). And the less techy people aren't buying realms, they're just quitting Java altogether. If Mojang thinks that if they do this they'll miss out on realms subscriptions, they're absolutely wrong. If a player wants their own private server and doesn't know how to make one, they'll 100% buy a Realm. If Mojang decides to do this it will make their community EXTREMELY happy, and they'd also get a big surge of players coming back to the game.

LAN worlds also don't cut it. Make java multiplayer like bedrock multiplayer.
