We know you like redstone, but how can we make redstone better?

I think a logical crafting recipe for this would be a 2x2 of redstone dust.  It would make a less compact block, and so it would make sense for it to be a dust block.

The only thing I worry about is if the code would be able to handle a falling entity giving off a redstone signal as it passes.  But if it is possible, it would be an interesting new redstone component.

Having to use less redstone would be nicer than 3x3 redstone. I didn't suggest a change in the crafting recipe from redstone dust to a block because i was simply placing this block in between the redstone and the compact redstone block ingame. The recipe to the old block or suggested block could possibly be a separate request post.

    Excellent idea!

I think it would be possible in the current engine for a falling block to interact with a redstone component. After all, minecarts can trigger detector rails and activator rails while they're moving. The only problem with it would probably be deciding which components it powers or activates, how long the signal or interaction lasts, and whether it interacts differently at rest (i.e. as a block) versus when it's falling (i.e. as an entity). The block form could probably just copy the compacted block, but the entity form might be somewhat more complicated because its coordinates aren't integers like a block's are, and it can't receive block updates from adjacent blocks (but it probably wouldn't need them anyway).
